Romeo And Juliet Star-Crossed Lovers Essays
Romeo and Juliet: Star-Crossed Lovers? After reading Shakespeare?s Romeo and Juliet I noticed something that everybody must had noticed: their immaturity. Romeo and Juliet see each other and instantly fall in love. The next day they get married and two days after that they die for each other. I think that nobody is capable of doing such thing for someone you have less than a weeek of knowing. The haste of this play is what shocked me the most. I really don?t know what Shakespeare was trying to transmit through it. Maybe he was warning people so they could take decissions more calmly, or maybe he was trying to critizice the youth of that time. What I do know about Romeo and Juliet is that they were not really in love, and that fate didnt play a big role in their lives. The main purpose of this paper is to explain why werent Romeo and Juliet in love. I believe that love is something very easy to feel, but once you feel it it turns complicated. What I know for sure is that nobody can fall in love just by seeing someone. It could be called love at first sight by many, but I dont believe in that. That is called physical attraction. Love something that grows inside with time. If Romeo and Juliet had lived on and get to know each other well, what could be the odds of them staying together? Nobody can love someone else if they dont really know each other. Sometimes what we feel at first is not real, because feelings can trick us. Lucy Kavaler, a member of the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, pointed out the next passage: Soldiers were required to exercise in heat of 103 degrees at high humidity, which caused a rise in body temperature. They were allowed to rest for a while and then, still overheated, were asked to detect light signals flashed in a random manner. A second group of men exercised at 75 degrees. More light flashes were reported by the men who were hotter, which at first seemed to indicate that this state increased their alertness and competence. But when their detection reports were compared with the number of true signals, it was found that the increase was in false reports. Their judgment was not as sound as that of cooler men. They had become more willing to take a risk and insist that they saw a signal when in fact there was none. This is a clear example of how people take decisions without knowing what they are really doing and without thinking of the consequences. Romeo and Juliet didnt know what a big responsibility marriage was, and especially between their families. So, if they were not in love, what could possibly be the cause why they went through all of this? Maybe it was just rebelliousness. Immediately after they saw each other they were informed that they were from enemy families. But that didnt stop them. Probably it made everything more interesting, they were playing with fire, they knew it and they liked it. That was not smart thinking. Also they could have been trying to unite both families together, but if that was the case, Romeo messed it up when he confronted Tybalt. Also the participation of Friar Lawrence and the Nurse was absurd. I believe they were old enough to know that all this was only a childs game. How could they possibly support these two kids in taking such a dangerous decision? It sounds illogical to me. Another important point to consider is the role that fate plays throughout the story. People say that Romeo and Juliet were meant for each other because it was their destiny to be together. Also, both Romeo and Juliet believed that. Romeo says during one of his monologues that he was fortunes fool (III. 1. 141). But for me, there is no fate written on anyone. Life is not a train that forces us to follow the tracks no matter where we want to go. Instead, it is like a spaceship floating in outer space and we are the pilots. Recognizing and Controlling a Tree Burl Little research has been done to confirm the cause (or causes) of burls. A burl could be caused by many environmental factors, but the biology of burls on trees is not well known. To be sure, burls and galls may serve as secondary infection avenues for insects and diseases, but as a rule, they do not appear to be harmful to most trees and maintain protective bark. Lastly, our team found out that the organization also faces different types of conflicts like other big organization. Through the interview contacted in the organization, Alex and Jackie informed our team that the most common form of conflict in the organization is the relationship conflict. However, the owners of Axle Color Studio were quick to point out that the conflict emanated mostly from personal relationships outside the business. The other type of conflict identified was task conflict where the content of work overlaps with each other. In this case, Alex and Jackie pointed out that there were low levels of task conflict within their organization.

But as a matter of fact, they still loom large in the human societies of all standards. Don Anderson is the main character of the movie. He is the famous Anderson who is known for the preparation of ââ¬Å"Big Oneâ⬠of Mickeyââ¬â¢s hamburger. This shows how the protagonist of the film is connected with the world of fast food. The main thing around which the film is constructed is to judge whether these businesses are honest or not. He finds one fault with the products of his company and travels to Cody in Colorado to trace the source of these bad and unhealthy ingredients in the products. In a way this film introduces the audience with the modern day world where almost every vice is present in the society just as they used to exist in the past. The presence of cow manure in the Mickeyââ¬â¢s product is highly symbolic as it shows the commonly found tendency to live by cheating on others. A fast food nation like USA today looks after only the benefits from the business and not after the quality of service they are providing the customers with. This is the harsh truth, which Don Anderson discovers in his own company while visiting Cody in Colorado. ââ¬Å"Fast Food Nationâ⬠is a movie that concentrates on many of the recent problems, which we come across in the modern world. Apart from that there are also other problems, which are not felt by us. Some of the downtrodden people have to face these truths in their lives. This is really unfortunate as we talk about the overall development of the world we act in a very hypocritical way. According to some of the well known critics ââ¬Å"Fast Food Nationâ⬠is a well made angry movie which vents out the idealistic wrath on the wrong way in which the nation like USA is traveling towards a so called progress. It is obviously a credit going to Richard Linklater for the fact that he has chosen such a sensitive subject on which the economy of USA is dependent to a great extent. The glamour-less style of the movie is one of the most important symbolic, which is followed throughout the movie. We all know that America is a country of glamour and this is why a movie based on this country is hoped to be flashing with glamour and style. Unlike all other movies, ââ¬Å"Fast Food Nationâ⬠is an entirely anti-glamour movie where all the characters are the dwellers of a very indifferent land. Truth hidden beneath the glamour is the main motive of this movie and this is why Linklater has focused more on incidents rather than the glamorous aspect of the film. (Morris, 2006) Linklater is very much successful in taking the audience to the root of the problems. He takes the audience to the slaughterhouses where raw materials for hamburger are produced. Visiting these places the audience is able to go through a series of events, which are revealing about how USA still deals on the grounds of race, gender and ethnicity. The Mexican immigrants are nothing better than the cows, which are slaughtered for the production. They are also exploited to a huge extent. By connecting to the story of the Mexican border Linklater actually introduces the audience with another horrible truth, which is looming large in the country. The country, which boasts of its democracy, is itself a system of exploitation and this is something, which Fast Food Nation deals with very carefully. Uniglobe is the meat plant where the team of Mexican workers joins. This is the place where the white Americans take the full advantage over the Mexicans as they have come in the country obtaining illegal process. It is very shocking to see a white that works as the floor supervisor threats the Mexican workers to kill them through the slaughtering machine unless they work properly. This show of rudeness opens up the horrible way in which the white people in American society are still dealing with the Mexicans. Money is the main thing, which draws the poor Mexicans to this vast land of USA where they have neither identity nor respect. There is a scene in the movie where a Mexican falls inside the slaughtering machine and loses his hand, which is chopped by the blade. The terrible scene is something, which agitates the audience to the core. Fast Food Nation not only focuses on the macro system of the society but also on the micro system where the workers are exploited at the same rate. We see the troubles, which are faced by Sylvia, the Mexican young woman who starts working as a hotel room cleaner. She faced huge problems in the slaughterhouse of Uniglobe where her husband and sister continue to work. The dangers of crossing the border are one of the most important elements, which the movie has dealt with. It shows the extent of risk, which the Mexicans are ready to undertake for their survival. Throughout the film it has dealt with huge problems in modern America. But the most important thing about them is the fact that everything, which happens in the life of the Mexican friends, is also the parts of the greater American life. Exploitation and all the other associated elements in the movie are actually representing the wholesome picture of the United States of America.à (Mother Jones, 2006) The use of satire in the film is a main thing, which consolidates the theme even more. There are actually three narrative parts that have been used in this movie. The pattern of the movie is very much like the documentary films, which shows the true picture of the world and easily deal with even some of the most controversial topics. Apart from human cruelty, animal cruelty is also an integral part of the film. However, the movie also concentrates on the matter of sexual orientation, which is a big issue in todayââ¬â¢s America. Amber, the role played by Ashley Johnson, faces problems seeing the difference of sexual orientations among her friend. She asks her close friends not to meet cute looking boys, believing that they practice homosexuality. This is somehow associated with the slaughterhouse atmosphere and the theme thus becomes more convincing.

Comparing Tennessee Williamââ¬â¢s Life and Streetcar Named Desire and Glass
Parallels in Williamââ¬â¢s Life and A Streetcar Named Desire and Glass Menagerieà à à à à à à à à à à à Tennessee Williams is one of the greatest American playwrights. He was constantly shocking audiences with themes such as homosexuality, drug addictions, and rape. He broke free from taboos on such subjects, paving the way for future playwrights. He also was a very good writer. One of the things he is famous for is his dialogue, which is very poetic. Williams wrote about his life. The Glass Menagerie is a very autobiographical play. A Streetcar Named Desire, although meant to a play that anyone can relate to, also contained characters and situations from his life. In both plays, the characters are drawn from his life. The other relationship I would like to discuss is the similarities between The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire, which have similar characters and themes throughout them. à Tennessee Williams was born Thomas Lanier Williams, in 1911, in Columbus, Mississippi. He had an older sister named Rose, who was born in 1909; his one younger brother, Dakin was born in 1919. Williams lived with his mother and her parents in small southern towns. HRM 598 Case Study: Getting and Using Compensation Information ââ¬Å"Compensation is a systematic approach to providing monetary value to employees in exchange for work performed. Compensation may achieve several purposes assisting in recruitment, job performance, and job satisfaction. Compensation is a tool used by management for a variety of purposes to further the existence of the company. Compensation may be adjusted according to the business needs, goals, and available resources. The three careers I chose for this case study are Public Relations Specialist, High School Teacher, and Project Coordinator. The reason for me choosing these specific careers was that Iââ¬â¢ve held each one at some point in time. In this case study we will examine why each job has different salary ranges and why. Question #1 Doing this research Iââ¬â¢ve come to find that out of the three jobs that I selected, a project coordinator is paid the most on average. The project coordinator is paid $89,5 09 a year on average.I was shocked to find out that out of the three careers chosen, that a public relations specialist is paid the least of all three. The public relations specialist on average is paid $45,931 a year. I expected that the project coordinator position would be the highest paid out of the three, however I did not expect for the teacher to be paid more ($53,447 a year on average) than the public relations specialist. I expected the teacher to be paid the least of all three. Usually teachers are thought to be paid the least when comparison to other professions.Some factors that could play a part in the difference could be number of days worked (teachers usually have a 9 month work year), levels of responsibility the job carries (project coordinators are generally in charge of seeing an operation through from beginning to end) whether or not the company is private or state funded (teachers are usually employees of the state, less money is involved) are some factors that could possibly be the differences in pay just to name a few. Question 2 Different jobs come with different benefit packages, and thatââ¬â¢s just how the cookie crumbles.Project coordinators on average make $7,217 on average a year in bonuses. The project coordinators have the highest bonuses out of three companies selected. Next out of the three is public relations specialist. The public relation specialists on average make $532 in bonuses a year. Lastly we have the teachers. Teachers make $0 in bonuses a year on average. Teachers may have the most important job in the public eye, but in terms of bonuses there is no merit to issue bonuses. Teachers are expected to show up and teach the students so that they will do well on the state test.The project coordinator on the other hand makes a nice little penny when it comes to bonuses. Project coordinators have a lot of tasks to accomplish with a short period of time to do so. When deadlines are met or beat certain bonuses may be award ed. Bonuses in this field are performance based. When dealing with public relations specialist itââ¬â¢s tricky to talk about bonuses. Some factors that effect bonuses in this field are, is the company private owned or are you working for a person, what field you are doing PR in just to name a few. Depending on what pay scale the company has in place could affect how bonuses are set up as well.Question#3 Stock options are benefits in the form of an option given by a company to an employee to buy stock in the company at a discount or at a stated fixed price. With the data that was present for these three careers, there was no stock option information available. To me the Teacher is the only professions out of the three that I think arenââ¬â¢t allowed stock options. There are no stocks in public schools, so you canââ¬â¢t earn something that doesnââ¬â¢t exist. Project coordinator and public relations specialist are entitled to stock options.The determining factors to whether or not stock options are made available lye solely with company. If the company offers stock options, the people who are in the public relations specialist and project coordinator positions are eligible, it just depends on the company. Teachers canââ¬â¢t get them, because they are not offered in that public sector. Question4 After reading the job descriptions for the three careers I chose, I found the program coordinator and the public relations specialist descriptions were pretty much right on the money, however the teaching description was acking and left a lot to be desired. The description for the program coordinator was right on the money. It gives you an accurate run down on whatââ¬â¢s expected from the position, and what is required to fulfill the position at its maximum capacity. The description I read for the public relations specialist may have been the best one. The description given for this job painted a clear and accurate picture of the position. From my persona l experience the description I read for the teaching position was generic and lacking of substance. It didnââ¬â¢t quite detail what the job entails in detail.I think the descriptions were worded to give the job seeker an overall view of the job. Question #5 After researching these positions in my local area my findings were not that surprising. The area I did my study for was Chicago, IL, and Chicago wages are a lot higher than most other cities. The reason why I think Chicago wages are higher than most is due to the cost of living for one. Another is the Illinois state tax is higher than most cities as well. Location is one of the biggest reason I can say as to why the pay grades are higher here in Chicago.Some factors that play a part in location that effects pay could be, but not limited to; crime, taxes, cost of living, and environmental conditions. With the public relations specialist, and program coordinator positions, their pay is 7% higher in the city of Chicago. Teachers in Chicago on average make $14,670 more than the average stated on the websites. These findings really werenââ¬â¢t surprising at all, they were sort of expected. Question #6 The information on this site would be very beneficial to a graduate fresh out of college doing their contract negotiations.I would use the information in my negations by starting off with getting a clear understanding of my duties going off the description set forth by the website. The website gives good information to start a salary negotiation, because it gives you a median to start your negotiation off with. When doing these negotiations I would show the median numbers for the task set forth by the description giving. A few factors that might have a bearing on the salary could be but not limited too; location, the companyââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ revenue intake, years of experience, and education level just to name a few.Question #7 The labor markets for these particular jobs are large in the sense of the fact th at these careers have markets all over the world and in many different fields. When talking about labor markets you have to remember that labor markets may be local or national in their scope and are made up of smaller, interacting labor markets for different qualifications, skills, and geographical locations. They depend on the exchange of information between employers and job seekers about wage rates, conditions of employment, level of competition, and job location.People working in the three fields Iââ¬â¢m covering in this case study are recruited all over the country to fill positions they are qualified for. The geographical location of these jobs plays a huge part in the salary wages paid out. After doing some research it seems like southern rural states have the lowest paying wages. Using the ââ¬Å"teacherâ⬠position for example, a teacher starts of at $32,400 a year in Jackson, MS, but that same teacher would start of at 44,230 a year in the suburbs of Chicago. Geogr aphical location plays a major part in wages.In the States of Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia all these positions are paid less than states such as Illinois, New York, Washington D. C, Florida, and Dallas. Question 8 The median teaching salary was $52,447 on average for the year. The minimal salary is $34,327, thatââ¬â¢s an $18,120 difference. Geographical location plays a huge part in these wages and the differences. Like I stated before the rural and southern locations generally have the lowest wages. The highest pay on average for a teacher is $71,093 a year, thatââ¬â¢s an $18,646 difference from the median salary.The median salary for a public relations specialist is $45,931 dollars a year. The minimal salary for this position is $34,121 a year, thereââ¬â¢s an $11,810 difference in the pay. The highest level of pay for this position is $55,657, thereââ¬â¢s a $9,726 difference. In this position, bigger cities have the best market for this career. A program coordinator income on average is $89,509 a year. This career is paid rather well. The lowest average salary is 68,779 a year, thatââ¬â¢s a $20,730 difference. With thermosetting polymers, once the polymerization has occurred, no further deformation can occur. Thus, the polymerization reaction and the shape-forming process must be accomplished simultaneously. b) The differences in injection molding of thermosets are (1) shorter barrel length, (2) lower temperatures in the barrel, these first two reasons to prevent premature curing; and (3) use of a heated mold to cause cross-linking of the TS polymer. c) Thermosetting plastics are suitable for injection molding.The basic modification which must be made to the process is that the molds must be heated to allow polymerization and crosslinkin g to occur in the mold cavity. This gap has customers such as young professionals with a high disposable income. BMW has limited opposition, and as such there is a large usage gap, which means there is good potential for high sales. This market gap has the potential for giving BMW the growth it is striving for. BMW should target this gap using the Mini brand, as the Mini has the right image unlike any BMW branded products. The main risks for BMW are its limited knowledge of the market sector, and its limited financial resources. The main sector rivals of BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagon (Smart and Beetle), both have more sector experience and greater financial resource. These rivals will simultaneously attempt to out-price the Mini, and develop replacement products. The core established products of BMW, the 3, 5, and 7 Series, provide a stable cash flow, enough to develop and introduce replacement models. BMW is however an ambitious company and wants to grow. To do this BMW has been expanding its portfolio and attacking new markets, a risky, but profitable strategy. This strategy began with the launch of the Z3 sports car, and more recently the Z8 sports car and X5 44 vehicle. The latest stage of this strategy is the launch of the Mini brand. BMW has not produced a small, affordable, lifestyle vehicle since the days of the bubble car. The introduction of the mini range is the most risky of all BMWs strategies for growth. BMWs ability to inject personality, eccentricity, and fun into the Mini is the big risk. BMW is a not just a company, it is a brand. The BMW brand manufactures automobiles built on engineering precision, manufacturing excellence, and being German. As the adverts tell us all, a BMW is The Ultimate Driving Machine. The Mini is also a brand. The Mini brand is built on personality, eccentricity, and being British. BMW cannot just re-badge, re-engineer and re-sell the brand as the BMW Mini. The very appeal of the Mini brand would be lost. Huge media and public interest greeted the launch of the Mini1, the first model to be released. The Mini Cooper, perhaps the model most greatly associated with the brand, is soon to be launched, and it is this model that will perhaps determine the success of the product range. BMW is a multi-product, global manufacturing company. The BMW marque is well established as a maker of high quality automobiles. To maximize the performance of the company, its products need to be evaluated and classified so as to decide whether to invest, hold, or withdraw support from them. These are strategic decisions, and are made according to the information derived from the analysis of the company portfolio. The tools that will be used in the portfolio analysis and management are as follows: * Product lifecycle analysis * Boston Consulting Group Growth-Share Matrix * General Electric Multifactor Matrix These are all flexible tools that can be used to analyze both products and brands. The first step is to analyze BMWs product portfolio. BMW has a range of products, some currently on the market, and some awaiting launch (Mini CooperS). Below is an array showing BMWs current product portfolio, this will form the basis of the analysis of BMWs current and future market. The array above describes BMWs current portfolio in terms of the products themselves, but what about the markets. Each product follows the product lifecycle, each will be at a different stage of that cycle, and each will have different market characteristics. Although it is attractive to have all the products within a portfolio at the peak of their sales at the same time, this does create problems. BMW knows the importance of making sure that not all of its products are at maturity at once, as this might result in the products beginning to decline at the same time. It is clear from the time scale chart above, that BMW has staggered the lifecycles of three products. These are the 3, 5, and 7 Series saloons. This staggering not only helps to ensure a more constant income, but also allows for the development of replacement products, such as the imminent replacement of the 7 Series. BMW has also been expanding its portfolio recently and this can be seen by the presence of some new product launches in the last few years. The Mini being the most recent, and the Mini Cooper still to be launched. In order to classify BMWs products, an analysis of the portfolio is needed. The first formulated, and most simple is the Boston Consulting Group Growth-Share Matrix. The Boston Matrix shown over the page consists of four quadrants derived from Market Growth rate and Market Share. Market growth rate is the vertical axis of the matrix. This indicates the annual growth rate of the market sector in which each product falls, and can be used as a proxy for Market attractiveness. Market share is the horizontal axis of the matrix. This indicates the Market share of each product relative to its biggest competitor. The Boston Consulting group argued that the cash flow generated by a product is dependant on which quadrant the product falls in. BMW has a fairly settled portfolio of products. Each product is more a family of slightly different models, varying by specification. The BMW 3 Series is placed within a very crowded sector of the automobile industry; the Luxury small saloon. The 5 and 7 Series are larger and more expensive saloons than the 3 series, and are placed within slightly less volatile sectors of the market. The 3 Series is positioned just below the Star, in the Cash Cow quadrant in the matrix. The current 3 Series model is a market leader in a mature market sector. Its high market share leads to a high cash flow rate, and its position in a mature market means that investment support in areas such a product and process development is low. The 5 series too, is comfortably positioned as a Cash Cow. It is a mature product, placed and sold in a less volatile market than the 3 series. This means that the 3 and 5 series family of products have extremely high profitability, due to their high level of sales, and the low level of expenditure needed to maintain the sales levels. The 7 series however is a model in decline in terms of its lifecycle. It is found at the ultimate destination of all products, a pet. The product does have market share, but its desirability is waning and its performance relative to its competitors is not what it once was. The market for the 7 series however, is still performing well. This means that BMW should, and will review the model with a view to re-launch in the near future. The above products are all fairly settled. Many of them have been being manufactured for many years now with several re-designs and re-launches. BMW has however recently begun expanding its portfolio, and the result of this is some new star and problem children. One of these stars is the X5. The X5 is a new market area for BMW. The 44 market can be extremely profitable, especially the On-road 44 products. This market is very large and growing, and BMW have made an attempt to get a slice of the cake with the X5. The Z3 and Z8 are very similar products. They are both small sports cars, differing in the Boston Matrix in terms of market share and price. The Z3 is a star, but the Z8 could be described a problem child. More affordably priced than the Z8, and with a larger share of the growing market, the Z3 is a product beginning to mature and generate a good positive cash flow. The Z8 however has a tiny share of the same market. This is not due to overpricing, or poor performance. It is because BMW has taken the step of deliberately limiting production to ensure a high level of prestige and desirability for the product. Why do this? The Z8 could be described as an exercise in marketing itself. It is not about making profit for the company in terms of direct sales, but about raising awareness of the BMW brand and the values BMW wants its customers to believe the brand stands for. Even the placement of this product in a recent James Bond film reiterates this point. An exciting, debonair character, using a BMW during his technology packed adventures. These are all characteristics of the brand that BMW want to imprint upon the psyche of its customers. The second available tool is the General Electric Multifactor Matrix. Products are evaluated in terms of Competitive Position and Market Attraction. This matrix shows more clearly how the established 3, 5, and 7 Series are performing. The 3 Series has a large share of a large, attractive market. Its competitive position is also strong. The short arrow shows that it is only moving from this position slowly, it is maintaining its position. This reiterates the description of the 3 Series as a Cash Cow. The 5 Series is also in a similar position, if weakening more quickly. The 7 Series however, is different to the previous two models. It has a comparatively small share of a less attractive market. The long arrow shows that the competitiveness of this product is reducing rapidly and it is fast becoming a Pet. Once again the imminent re-launch of the 7 Series confirms this analysis, and BMW will hope it goes some way to improving the position of this product. The more recently launched, new products can generally be found to the right of the main three BMW products. With the exception of the Z3, their competitive positions are still fairly weak, but all three have good market attractiveness. This is logical; as BMW would not have launched products into markets it deems to be unattractive. They show the characteristics of problem children as newly introduced products finding their feet in the market. The emphasis of product portfolio analysis is the management of existing products to maximize their strengths. BMW also needs to look for new products and markets to remain profitable and grow. The most simple support tool for looking at growth opportunities is the Ansoff Matrix, which combines existing and new products, with existing and new markets to form a matrix. The four quadrants formed describe different strategies for growth. This type of analysis is also known as the Strategic Thrust of the company. As mentioned previously, BMW has a strong base consisting of three established products. These are the 3, 5, and 7 Series saloons. Along with the Z3, these constitute BMWs existing products being sold in existing markets. The most common strategy used here is to try to increase the market share of these products. This is done by increasing sales, either to current buyers and or finding new customers in the same market. This strategy is intuitive, but may lead to long-term product development problems. Hence strategies are required whereby new products are introduced to the product portfolio. These products can be aimed at either new or existing markets. The Z8 is BMWs supercar, and is aimed at the same market sector as the more affordable Z3. The intention of this product strategy is not to replace the Z3, as it could appear to be. The Z8 is a special case, intended to reinforce the BMW brand image. A more risky strategy is a new product for a new market, and this is where the X5 and Mini range fall. The X5 may seem entirely unlike any vehicle BMW has produced before, however it is not total diversification. For example, a four-wheel drive system has already been developed and used on models such as the M5, a high performance 5 Series. This engineering expertise is also coupled with experience in the sector derived from the acquisition of Land Rover, which BMW kept after the sale of Rover. Also from the ownership of Rover, came BMWs acquisition of the Mini brand. BMW has not produced a small, affordable, lifestyle vehicle since the days of the bubble car. PEST is an analysis of the external environment and is useful in identifying potential customers, markets and developing product strategies. It confirms the idea of a young, professional customer base, looking for high quality in a small car. Another tool is SWOT analysis. SWOT is a structured approach to evaluating the strategic position of a business, providing more information in developing product strategies. SWOT identifies a companies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It can successfully be used in conjunction with gap analysis, as it assesses the factors affecting those gaps. For example, BMW does see the small Lifestyle car as a very attractive market gap, but SWOT may show that the risks are too high and BMWs resources to low, to enter that market. The marketing Potential of a product is the maximum number of potential customers. There cannot really be any certainty to the maximum number of potential customers for the Mini. Estimates nearly always come from market research data and evaluation of the markets of similar products such as the VW Beetle. BMW, as a global manufacturer, would be interested in the world Market Potential for the Mini. In Europe and the US, stable, growing economies mean that an already large number of young professionals are on the increase. The existing usage is the total number of customers purchasing a certain type of product. Data for evaluating this number is usual derived from market research again, as companies are unlikely to reveal exact sales figures to each other. There are really only two rivals competing in the same sector that the Mini will be targeted. This infers that the existing usage is relatively small. The Usage Gap is the difference between the Market Potential of a product, and the Existing Usage of similar products. If this is a large number, then there is the potential for a rapid expansion in sales. As the market potential for the Mini has been identified as being large, and the existing usage of the Mercedes SMART and VW Beetle small, then the potential for a successful product is good. The Beetle and Smart have similar features to the Mini, but good customer relations and clever promotion will help to make the Mini a success. To ensure that BMW is successful in this venture, a specific, structured new product strategy is required. It is extremely useful for marketing directors and designers of BMW to receive strategic guidance from the senior management about their vision and priorities for new product development. The importance of making sure that a product is introduced correctly can be seen in the finances of companies that do not introduce their products successfully.
